MTV's First Style VJ Coltrane Curtis Recalls Talking Fashion with Industry 'Pioneer' Pharrell Williams (Exclusive)
"Marc had this idea of creating this kind of futuristic football thing for a collaboration between Target and the NFL called Physical Science. When you go back and you look at the product, it would work today, but it didn't work then. So we kind of started building this editorial team and we launched it and it bricked. It tanked."
"Then, Ben White left to go to MTV. And this was the time when MTV was really trying to identify its footprint and digital world, and they hired Ben, whose first or second move was to bring me over."
Coltrane Curtis began his career in fashion and style through retail work at Ralph Lauren and collaborations with Marc Ecko. He participated in an innovative but unsuccessful marketing project called Physical Science that introduced him to magalog marketing strategies. This experience led to work at Complex magazine, where he learned about creating influencer environments under editor-in-chief Ben White. When White moved to MTV during the network's digital expansion, he brought Curtis along, launching Curtis's television career as MTV's first Style VJ, where he engaged celebrities in fashion discussions during a transformative period in the industry.
