The European Union has updated its Cyber Blueprint, a non-binding framework aimed at coordinating incident response and crisis management amidst escalating cyber security threats. This approach involves 27 member states and other involved nations, addressing the potential for significant impacts on public security and the internal market. The blueprint outlines what constitutes a cyber crisis and the mechanisms for response, reinforcing the EU's commitment to managing risks that could affect various sectors and societal functions. Officials emphasize the need for a unified and proactive strategy in the face of current geopolitical tensions.
"In an increasingly interdependent Union economy, disruptions from cyber security incidents can have far-reaching impacts across various sectors," said executive vice-president for tech sovereignty, security and democracy Hanna Virkkunen.
"The proposed cyber security blueprint reflects our commitment to ensuring a coordinated approach, leveraging existing structures to protect the internal market and uphold vital societal functions," she said.
"This recommendation is a crucial step forward in reinforcing our collective cyber resilience."
"Among other things, the blueprint sets out what a cyber crisis is and what would trigger cyber crisis mechanisms at Union level."
