One of LA's Top Mexican Chefs Has Closed His Nayarit Restaurant in Inglewood
Briefly

Checo's Seafood 106 Underground, led by Chef Sergio 'Checo' Peñuelas, permanently closed on May 1, 2025. Peñuelas, known for his acclaimed seafood creations, shared that the closure wasn't due to poor business. He gained prominence after praise from the late Jonathan Gold for his grilled snook and developed a following through his seafood pop-up. Peñuelas emphasized the closure wasn't the end, showing optimism toward future restaurant ventures.
"Unfortunately, we had to close at that location even though business was good, but we will be back with another restaurant soon," says Peñuelas.
"Peñuelas first rose to local acclaim when the late Jonathan Gold lauded his pescado zarandeado (grilled snook) in an LA Weekly review of Coni'Seafood in 2011..."
"Peñuelas developed a cult-following after Gold dubbed him 'The Snook Whisperer' in a 2017 story for the Los Angeles Times."
"After bouncing around the various factions of the Cossio family restaurants... Peñuelas struck out on his own with 106 Underground, a seafood pop-up in his backyard that opened in June 2018."
