Hyphy Burger, located in West Oakland, was launched by childhood friends Guap, a Grammy-nominated rapper, and Darion Frazier, a regional food influencer. Their venture pays homage to the Bay Area's Hyphy movement of the mid-2000s while focusing on community engagement. The menu features affordable items, including signature burgers, aimed at serving the local population. With plans to hire and train local residents, the duo is committed to maintaining their neighborhood's spirit through this culinary homage, all while generating excitement ahead of their formal grand opening.
Though it all might sound like a script from the next Ryan Coogler movie, it's actually happening. On February 14, Hyphy Burger informally went public in West Oakland.
What we are doing is representative of the greater meaning of community, the feeling, the spirit we grew up with," says Guap, who has a history as a Bay Area foodie.
We're trying to do the Hyphy version of In-N-Out."
The menu only consists of a few items as the operation gets its sea legs beneath them - something that both Guap and Frazier are being intentional about as they hire and train local residents to be a part of Hyphy Burger's grand opening.
