As customers increasingly encounter tipping prompts at fast-food and carryout restaurants, the appropriateness of tipping in these settings is being questioned. Many patrons, like Chris Nordstrom, feel uneasy about tipping at fast-food places, which traditionally are not seen as tipping environments. A Pew Research survey reveals that only 12% of U.S. adults tip at fast casual restaurants, with service quality being a major factor in tipping decisions. While some individuals are open to tipping if service is exceptional, the general sentiment leans towards not tipping when payment is made before service is rendered.
It usually catches me off-guard. It's not that I mind tipping in the right context. It's just that fast food, by nature, has traditionally been a non-tipping experience.
Unless they make less than minimum wage, no need to tip.
More often than not, I don't tip at fast-food places unless the staff has gone above and beyond.
If the option comes up, I'm always happy to tip.
