The North Atlantic right whale is facing imminent extinction due to historical whaling, ongoing shipping and fishing pressures, and climate-driven migratory changes.
With only about 370 individuals left, these whales, previously a significant economic resource for coastal communities, now symbolize both a tragic loss and a chance for restoration as local communities pivot to conservation efforts.
Many of the same coastal communities that once thrived on the whaling industry are now in a unique position to advocate for the right whale’s protection.
Despite a brief population recovery until 2011, the right whale's plight has worsened due to climate change and the ongoing challenges presented by the fishing and shipping industries.
