Learning A.S.L. is a humbling experience that challenges one’s sense of communication, forcing an acknowledgment of limitations while diving into a rich culture.
The immersion in ASL meant silence among classmates. This not only respected the deaf instructors but also created an intimate learning environment where gestures became the main form of communication.
Entering the realm of sign language exposed my vulnerabilities as a writer, as I grappled with the lack of words to express complex emotions and thoughts.
My journey through learning ASL involved navigating frustration and embarrassment but ultimately lead to a deeper understanding of language as a cultural connector.
