Today's youth, growing up with the internet, express mixed feelings about their experiences. Many lack awareness of the dangers of online interactions, wishing for more parental guidance in navigating social media. Concerns over political echo chambers and superficial online activism are prevalent, indicating a struggle with genuine social engagement. Moreover, the impact of screen time on mental health, particularly for those with ADHD, reveals a complicated relationship with internet usage and personal interests. These reflections shed light on how the digital landscape shapes their identities and relationships.
I wish that my parents monitored my usage more. I was talking to way older men on Kik and chat rooms who said I was 'mature for my age' at 15, and I believed it. My parents didn't want to invade my privacy to check or give me limits, so they didn't know what I was doing.
The way we share political views online and then build echo chambers, cutting off people who disagree, and insulating ourselves from different viewpoints. I think it creates an 'us-versus-them' mentality that is hard to break out of.
As someone with ADHD, my mind will always choose the path of a quick dopamine hit. My parents controlled my screen time, but now I find myself always reaching for Disney+.
