The Grid transforms Hanoi's Gia Lam Train Factory into an exhibition space that preserves cultural memory and industrial heritage. It exposes the site’s existing structures as a repository of spatial and cultural narratives without introducing new elements. The design draws on behavioral archaeology principles, emphasizing recontextualization in urban development. The factory represents a layered history, having undergone colonial, wartime, and reformist influences. As a result, The Grid serves both as an archaeological site and a cultural artifact, reflecting on the transformation from production facility to a space of artistic engagement.
The Grid, designed by Trung Mai / Ad hoc Practice, transforms the former Gia Lam Train Factory into an exhibition space that frames existing structures as repositories of spatial and cultural memory.
This project emphasizes recontextualization as a dynamic preservation method, engaging with contemporary urban development and memory questions while treating the site as a spatial archive.
