The Wandering House, designed by Lionel Ballmer Architectes, is a unique residence in Baar, Switzerland, that blends seamlessly into the surrounding Valaisan orchards. Elevated on stilts to minimize ecological disruption, the structure pays tribute to historic storage houses known as raccards. Featuring charred wood cladding and a recycled concrete base, it connects the past with modern design, supporting an adaptable interior layout. The design includes large glass windows to connect indoor spaces with scenic views, while sustainability measures utilize regionally sourced materials throughout the construction process.
The Wandering House is raised and supported by stilts, paying homage to traditional raccards - historic Valaisan storage houses.
With a compact footprint, the new structure seemingly floats above the land, respecting the site's natural ecology by limiting significant artificial interventions.
Internally, the Wandering House's spaces are designed for adaptability, organized around a central core for service and circulation.
The barn's historical presence is also leveraged, its ground floor transformed into a cellar and the upper floor into a sheltered reception area.
