The kindergarten in Fukahori Town, Nagasaki, embraces the region's historical fishing and shipbuilding heritage while adapting to a challenging sloped terrain. By positioning buildings to follow the land's natural contours, the design minimizes excavation, reduces CO₂ emissions, and maximizes play areas. The layout includes a corridor mimicking the town's narrow streets, encouraging active play through large staircases and climbing structures. The use of local colors in materials reinforces children’s connection to their hometown, creating an engaging environment that promotes exploration and learning within nature.
The architecture turns seemingly unfavorable terrain into opportunities for minimizing environmental impact and maximizing play areas, blending nature with children’s exploration.
Inspired by the narrow streets of Fukahori, the connecting corridor features a large staircase and climbing net, enhancing children's physical play and adventure.
The kindergarten's design incorporates local colors—blue for the port, red for cultural influences, and earthy tones for historic streets, creating a sense of place.
Throughout the building, indoor and outdoor spaces are designed to flow seamlessly, allowing 'play' to connect children with their local environment and heritage.
