feminist artistic legacy finds form in porcelain-clad spanish residence by viruta lab
Briefly

Casa Gesso, designed by Viruta Lab, embodies the spirit of Spanish feminist artist Ángela García Codoñer, merging contemporary architecture with cultural heritage. Incorporating her themes, the residence challenges traditional gender representations and honors women’s artistic contributions.
The design features a towering, two-story volume for private spaces, interconnected through a crafted oak cabinetry staircase, promoting both aesthetic coherence and functional flow across the living and sleeping areas.
A centerpiece of Casa Gesso is its interior courtyard, adorned with vertically arranged porcelain tiles, providing natural light and ventilation, while enhancing the serene atmosphere created by the consistent use of materials and textures.
The project’s homage to Codoñer is crucial; her distinct feminist themes from the seventies resonate through architectural choices, like the fluid living area forms and the dramatic lighting in the master bedroom, reflecting contemporary interpretations of femininity.
