Atsushi Shindo Reimagines Resin and Gravity With The Great Tree
Briefly

The "Ever Origin" exhibition at JAPAN SHOP 2025 featured "The Great Tree," an installation by Japanese designer Atsushi Shindo. The installation spans 32 feet in diameter and nearly 40 feet tall, merging themes of nature, technology, and material memory. The use of resin, particularly bio-resin, challenges perceptions of sustainability. The structure, which is suspended by a wire grip system, contains over 180 plant-derived cellulose acetate pieces crafted from plant-based material, showcasing the aesthetic beauty of natural imperfections while intended for architectural and design flexibility.
"The Great Tree" installation, spanning 32 feet in diameter and almost 40 feet tall, invites visitors into a world where nature, technology, and material memory converge.
Comprising over 180 plant-derived cellulose acetate pieces and suspended with more than 600 meticulously placed wire grips, "The Great Tree" balanced between gravity and weightlessness.
Shindo and his collaborators allowed the irregularities of the resin's flow to remain visible, capturing and refracting light for a dreamy effect.
Arakawa's wire grip system elevated the ethereal effect of the resin, creating the illusion that the pieces were floating, showcasing their versatility in architectural design.
