During Lunar New Year, Ferrero Rocher chocolates have become a popular gift, symbolizing wealth and prosperity, particularly in Chinese culture. Chef Clarice Lam incorporated these chocolates into her debut cookbook, creating Ferrero mochi bomboloncini, a new take on the traditional jian dui. This dish consists of deep-fried sesame balls filled with a melted Ferrero Rocher chocolate, offering a crisp-chewy texture and a sweet interior. Initially created for a fusion restaurant, Lam adapted the recipe for home cooks, much to her mother's delight, who now uses her cookbook for inspiration.
Ferrero Rocher is the fancy gift that you bring to any celebration in any Asian culture, especially in Chinese culture, because it's wrapped in gold.
These fried sesame balls are typically served at dim sum and filled with red bean paste or lotus paste; my version incorporates an entire Ferrero Rocher chocolate.
It's deep fried so it's crispy and warm and you get that nice crunch from the sesame, resulting in a nutty dessert with a crisp-chewy deep-fried mochi exterior.
To my surprise, my mom loves my take on jian dui and now refers to my cookbook to make recipes; that, to me, is really a gold star.
