Insects, often seen as pests, can serve as nutritious and environmentally friendly food sources. With over 2,000 edible species, cultures around the world, especially in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, incorporate them into cuisine. Though entomophagy remains a novelty in the West, research highlights that insects emit fewer carbon emissions and require less land and food compared to traditional livestock. The UN endorses insects as a sustainable protein source, promoting awareness of five beneficial bugs to eat, including grasshoppers, crickets, and mealworms.
Grasshoppers are very high in protein (their meat contains about 40%), which aids in muscle building, bone strength, and weight maintenance.
The United Nations declared insects a sustainable protein source in 2013, aiding global acceptance of entomophagy.
