Scientists have found that electric vehicle owners, on average, actually have a larger carbon footprint than drivers of petrol or diesel cars due to their affluent lifestyles.
The study revealed that while EVs reduce driving emissions, the wealthier lifestyle of their owners results in significant overall environmental impact, with some driving nearly two tonnes more CO2 annually.
Participants reported nearly all aspects of life, revealing that not only does vehicle type matter, but housing, transport, and consumption habits contribute to an individual’s total carbon footprint.
Interestingly, EV owners driven by concerns of economy and reliability had a much lower carbon footprint, indicating that motivations for car ownership significantly influence environmental impact.
