Over Two Million EVs And PHEVs Have Been Sold In California Since 2011

California has reached a significant milestone with over two million plug-in electric vehicles sold since 2011, representing 38.8% of all electrified car sales in the U.S. The trend is growing, with more EVs and PHEVs sold in the first nine months of 2023 than throughout all of 2022, indicating a strong shift towards zero-emission vehicles among consumers.
In Q3 of this year, California accounted for 30.3% of the national electric vehicle market with 115,897 EVs and PHEVs sold. The state's electrified vehicle market share reached 26.4%, showcasing the state's leading role in the transition to electric mobility.
The Tesla Model Y was the best-selling battery-powered vehicle in California during Q3, followed by the Tesla Model 3 and Hyundai Ioniq 5. The market also saw strong performances from the Toyota Rav4 Prime and other electrified vehicles, indicating a diverse consumer preference for EV options.
To accommodate the growing demand for electric vehicles, California has installed over 150,000 public and shared private EV chargers, including more than 137,000 Level 2 chargers and nearly 15,000 fast chargers, alongside 500,000 home chargers, demonstrating commitment to infrastructure necessary to support EV adoption.
