For much of the COVID-19 pandemic, Americans were voluntarily leaving their jobs at historically high rates. The era, commonly known as the Great Resignation, lasted for just over two years - from early 2021 until summer 2023.
While public sector jobs may pay less than private sector positions, they often offer better benefits like retirement pensions. The federal government and state & local government had quit rates below 1% in May 2024.
