Speeding reduced by 94% where speed cameras in NYC are located: DOT report
Briefly

A recent NYC Department of Transportation report shows that since speed cameras were introduced in 2014, speeding has dropped by 94% in monitored areas. Between 2021 and 2023, it was revealed that speed cameras correlate with a 14% reduction in traffic injuries and fatalities. Despite this success, legislation allowing speed cameras will expire unless renewed by June, prompting DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez to advocate for their continuation, emphasizing their role in curbing reckless driving behavior and reducing road fatalities.
Speed cameras are one of the most effective tools we have to change reckless driver behavior and prevent tragedies from happening.
The report found that streets with cameras installed in 2022 saw 14% fewer injuries and fatalities than locations without cameras.
It isn't a coincidence that locations with speed cameras have seen massive reductions in speeding, fewer deaths, and fewer injuries.
A law in Albany permitting the use of speed cameras throughout New York will expire this year unless the state legislature reauthorizes it before June.
