Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez described the shooting as a "despicable act of gun violence that took the life of an innocent teenage boy and left an entire family and community traumatized." He emphasized that such "senseless shootings tear at the fabric of our neighborhoods, leaving lasting pain and fear." He affirmed the commitment to hold accountable those who threaten innocent lives with violence.
The tragic event occurred on July 17, 2018, when Elijah Harris, then 19, rode his bike to a crowded playground in Bushwick and fired nine rounds. His reckless violence injured a 43-year-old man and fatally struck 15-year-old Kyon Jackson, who was at the playground with other children, illustrating the chaos and danger present in such environments.
Tahesha Carter, Kyon's mother, shared her devastation, stating, 'He was not the intended target. He loved basketball ever since he was 1 year old. He wanted to go to college, play basketball, buy me a house, and get us out of the projects.' This poignant reminder highlights the lost potential and dreams of a young life cut short.
