In Brooklyn, police are investigating the shooting death of Joharis Rivas, a 21-year-old man, who was killed in broad daylight outside an auto shop on Meserole Street. Officers arrived at the scene after a 911 call and found him unresponsive with a head wound. Rivas, a father of three, was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. As of Wednesday, no suspect information or motive had been disclosed. Notably, gun violence is uncommon in this precinct, with only one homicide last year reported.
Family members who answered the door at Rivas' listed address declined to speak with a reporter, other than to say he has three daughters and was at the auto shop to have his car repaired.
NYPD data shows gun violence is relatively rare in the 90th Precinct, which encompasses most of Williamsburg. One person was shot and killed in the precinct last year, and no one was fatally shot there in 2023, according to Gothamist's analysis of the data.
