Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen has announced felony charges against twelve pro-Palestinian protesters for allegedly breaking into Stanford's president's office and vandalizing the building with anti-Israel messages. The incident occurred on June 5, 2024, resulting in arrests and suspensions for the participating students. Rosen emphasized the distinction between lawful dissent and criminal acts, declaring the protesters crossed that line. The case's notoriety is enhanced by the involvement of one student, Dylan Gohill, who claimed he was there as a reporter and has not been charged.
Dissent is American. Vandalism is criminal. There is a bright line between making a point and committing a crime. These defendants crossed the line into criminality when they broke into these offices, barricaded themselves inside and started a calculated plan of destruction.
Students barricaded themselves inside the building and stayed there for three hours, the university said. Anti-Israel messages were spray painted on the inside and outside of the building, photos show.
Police broke into the office at about 7:15 a.m. and arrested the protesters. One police officer was 'lightly injured' when he was shoved by protesters, the university said.
The case has received extra attention because one of the students who was arrested - Dylan Gohill, 20, of Santa Monica - said he was there to cover the event as a reporter for the Stanford Daily.
