Nacer Bouhanni, a former professional cyclist, has shared his struggles with the fear of crashing that ultimately contributed to his retirement after 13 years in the sport. In the documentary 'Crash, peloton sous tension', he reflects on the mental impacts of accidents, citing his last crash at the 2022 Tour of Turkey as particularly traumatic. This incident left him with serious injuries and a prolonged absence from racing. He portrays cycling as 'the most dangerous sport in the world,' noting that the mental scars from crashes linger long after physical injuries heal.
"At the end of my career, I was thinking too much, but ultimately, during the sprint, the time to think is already too late," Bouhanni told L'Equipe.
"If I go there, there's a risk of falling, it's dangerous. If it falls, it's better to fall there."
"The falls leave lifelong scars on my head."
"I became a shadow of myself" following the crash.
