Directed by Jake Schreier, "Thunderbolts" offers a refreshing take on trauma within the Marvel universe, diving into its characters' mental health with sincerity. The film eschews typical superhero humor for a more heartfelt portrayal, particularly through Yelena Belova, played by Florence Pugh. As she grapples with her traumatic past, Yelena must navigate betrayal and form alliances with others like her, leading to an action-packed journey. While not devoid of typical Marvel antics, it stands out as an engaging and emotional experience, carving a unique niche in the franchise.
The movie, directed by Jake Schreier from a script by Eric Pearson and Joanna Calo, may not be original but it's sincere and heartfelt.
Thunderbolts is an unwieldy jumble, to be sure, and it's been designed, like all Marvel films, to help extend the brand unto infinity.
The star is the terrific Florence Pugh, who was introduced several movies back as Yelena Belova, a product of a top-secret Russian program.
To get out alive, she must join forces with other similarly betrayed operatives, some of whom have special powers.
