"The story features Gracia, an undocumented immigrant played by Katerina Lopez, who feels unsafe performing the spoken-word poetry she writes. She asks her best friend to step up."
"As popularity grows, the characters face questions about who gets to tell a story and who gets to speak. The playwright, Carissa Atallah, hopes the audience will leave with questions and carry on the conversation."
"Atallah wrote Brown Face in 2020 while working on her MFA in creative writing for the performing arts at UC Riverside. After the first student production, it received honors from the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival."
"The characters in Brown Face are college-age, and Atallah said the play gets more relevant as time goes on. 'These were just the conversations that I was having amongst my peers,' Atallah said."
Portland's Milagro Theatre will host a lively theater production from May 7 to May 24, featuring an open-mic poetry session. Directed by Mia Torres Garcia, the play presents a poetry-slam atmosphere with audience participation. The story follows Gracia, an undocumented immigrant, and her friend Mariza, who performs Gracia's poetry. As Mariza gains popularity, the characters confront issues of storytelling and voice. Playwright Carissa Atallah aims for the audience to leave with questions about these themes. A free slam poetry workshop is scheduled for April 19, inviting poets to participate in the open-mic sessions.
