Pope Leo XIV, in his first address, highlighted AI's threats to human rights and justice, echoing concerns from Pope Leo XIII during the Industrial Revolution. He chose the name Leo XIV to continue the dialogue on social issues related to technological advancements. The new Pope emphasized the Church's role in addressing these challenges and compared the current technological landscape to the past, reaffirming a commitment to protect human dignity amidst rapid changes brought on by artificial intelligence.
The Church offers everyone the treasury of her social teaching in response to developments in the field of artificial intelligence that pose new challenges for the defense of human dignity, justice, and labor.
Sensing myself called to continue in this same path, I chose to take the name Leo XIV, mainly because Pope Leo XIII in his historic Encyclical 'Rerum Novarum' addressed the social question in the context of the first great industrial revolution.
