Pentagram's recent project utilizing generative AI, particularly with the creation of over 1,500 icons, has sparked controversy within the design community, challenging traditional views of artistry.
Pentagram partner Paula Scher defended the use of AI, stating, "the definition of design in the dictionary is 'a plan.' We created a plan... this was not a job for an illustrator."
Despite backlash, Scher asserts the website aims to optimize government bureaucracy, emphasizing, "the whole notion of the site was to correct government bureaucracy... it could run all by itself."
Scher expressed her resolve against critics by articulating, "If someone else wants to draw 1,500 icons every other week, they can do that."
