Tech hiring managers anticipate layoffs, with a notable focus on roles likely to be automated and employees possessing outdated skills. A General Assembly survey revealed that 54% of managers foresee staff reductions, with 45% directly linking job security to AI replaceability. To retain their positions, employees should excel in performance metrics, showcase talent, and possess AI-related skills. High-demand technical skills include AI development and cybersecurity, while strategic thinking ranks as a vital soft skill. CEO Daniele Grassi emphasizes the looming skills crisis in the tech industry due to increasing AI investments and productivity-driven staff cuts.
"We're on the precipice of an unprecedented skills crisis," Grassi said. "Businesses are ramping up AI investments and reducing headcount in the name of productivity, but the impact on the workforce could be devastating."
According to the survey, employees' best bet for keeping their job is to have a high performance rating, with 62% of tech hiring managers citing it as crucial.
The findings suggest that roles likely to be cut include those that are easily replaceable by AI, with 45% of hiring managers indicating this trend.
Specific technical skills in highest demand include AI development, mentioned by a quarter of hiring managers, followed by cybersecurity and data analysis.
