An engineer at xAI, founded by Elon Musk, resigned after being pressured to delete a post criticizing the upcoming Grok 3 model. The company argued that his comments violated confidentiality, despite Musk's earlier public announcements about the model. The engineer, Benjamin De Kraker, felt that his opinion was harmless yet faced threats of termination, raising concerns about the company's commitment to free speech. Musk himself commented on the situation, adding further complexity. De Kraker expressed disappointment over the company's actions, highlighting a tension within xAI regarding honest discussions about its products.
As De Kraker explained, xAI claimed that it asked the engineer to delete his post because he'd publicly referenced the forthcoming model - despite Musk announcing it on the same platform more than a month prior.
"But here we are," he wrote. "It's very disappointing that a company purporting to champion free speech would try to fire a low-level employee over a clearly-labeled opinion that contains absolutely nothing controversial."
