Datacenter energy usage to more than double in next 5 years
Briefly

The International Energy Agency (IEA) projects that global datacenter electricity consumption will more than double by 2030, largely driven by artificial intelligence (AI). Datacenters are expected to account for over 20% of electricity demand growth in advanced economies over the next five years. The US, presently consuming 45% of the global total, will see datacenters surpass energy-intensive manufacturing sectors in electricity use by 2030. The IEA advocates for evolving energy policies and sees potential in AI for optimizing energy systems to mitigate emissions, emphasizing responsible utilization of this powerful tool.
"In the United States, datacenters are on course to account for almost half of the growth in electricity demand" over the next five years, said IEA executive director Fatih Birol.
AI is a tool, potentially an incredibly powerful one, but it is up to us - our societies, governments and companies - how we use it.
