Baldur's Gate, Divinity Dev Reveals How It Uses Generative AI
"I think at this point everyone at the company is more or less OK with the way we're using it."
"Everything is human actors; we're writing everything ourselves,"
"For an RPG developer, what you really want is something that helps with reactivity to agency,"
"It's always going to be the people that are going to make a difference," Vincke said. "And so for us, it's super clear that we're investing heavily into the team and the human touch that's being added to that."
Larian uses generative AI and machine learning across development for exploring ideas, creating concept art, generating placeholder text, and preparing presentations. The studio applies AI to repetitive or unwanted tasks and to help produce gameplay permutations and reactive responses to unanticipated player actions, aiming to augment agency and reactivity. The new Divinity title will contain no AI-generated in-game content; all acting and writing are human-produced. Some internal pushback and broader industry concerns about AI and intellectual property or jobs exist, but the company reports increased hiring and continued investment in human talent and craftsmanship.
