AI courses are becoming increasingly popular - even among nurses and teachers
Briefly

Universities are increasingly modifying their AI courses to accommodate the growing interest from non-STEM students. Reid Simmons, program director at Carnegie Mellon University, noted a shift in focus towards generative AI, expanding the curriculum significantly. Originally offering a foundational understanding of AI, CMU’s program now includes numerous higher-level courses in machine learning and broader AI aspects. The aim is to create accessible courses for students lacking a technical background, reflecting the field's diverse applications and the demand for AI knowledge in various fields.
"These large language models, you know, generative AI - have basically taken over, sucked all the oxygen out of the room," said Reid Simmons, the program director for the Bachelor of Science in AI at CMU.
"A lot of work in artificial intelligence is focused solely on machine learning, but there are a lot of other aspects, including things like search, knowledge representation, decision making, robotics, computer vision, natural language," Simmons said.
"So that's kind of the next step that we're looking at, is how to kind of have an AI for a broader audience, without a strong technical background."
"Now, Simmons said, the number of classes dedicated to machine learning has exploded, going from one or two 'basic' courses to 'as many as 10' higher-level classes."
