A new e-bike subsidy program is being proposed in outer-borough neighborhoods to address high car dependency, lack of public transit access, and air pollution. Bike New York will examine how e-bikes can effectively replace car trips, particularly in areas where public transportation is insufficient. This initiative aims to make e-bikes a viable option for short-distance travel, potentially advancing climate and equity goals by providing a cost-effective transportation choice for underserved communities. Similar programs are being introduced in various states to encourage reduced car use for short trips.
"Replacing car trips is one of the goals of this grant," said Jon Orcutt, Bike New York's advocacy director and former Department of Transportation official.
"By making e-bikes more affordable, [a program like this would] advance climate and equity goals while providing a reliable mobility option for underserved communities," he told Streetsblog.
