The unlikelihood of any significant near-term ridership increases stemming from returning office workers means fare-reliant BART's recovery now hinges on luring two key groups - drivers fed up with miserable traffic congestion and people who've ditched BART because they feel it's unsafe and unsanitary to ride.

Just 19% of the 161 employers who responded to the survey say their employees are coming to offices five days a week, while 23% have brought workers back three days a week - the survey's most popular in-person schedule.A combined 30% of respondents said their employees are commuting to offices one day a week or not at all.

The parrots arrived in the late 1980s - there are conflicting theories about why, but a pet store escape seems most likely - and managed to proliferate. There were an estimated 220 during the last count.

Crazy day. After 22 years between SVB and FRB, ...

1/ So, this AM California state regulators put the bank in receivership under FDIC control. This has created a spiral in the banking industry overall, although it is clear to many of us the issues at Silvergate & SVB are very idiosyncratic.
2) But what is happening at banks in reality is less important than what people perceive to be the case (i.e. widespread solvency/liquidity issues). As such, we've seen well capitalized banks with very different exposure drop in the public markets. FRB was down to 47 today https://t.co/aWz3W0SpJM
3/ But back to SVB. After a town hall yesterday which created panic vs. calm, the bank run began. Prior to the run, SVB's main issue to solve for was lagging NIM/NII due to their securities book. Once the run started, solvency became an issue.
...
10/A sale by a strong party would be the best of course. The issue right now for the startup market is several dimensional.
Most GPs are pausing capital calls; some companies expecting wires for new rounds will have to wait. Even longer if the fund has excess cash stuck at SVB
...
15/ Heartbreaking, and it could have been avoided, both by different strategic decisions by SVB (and better messaging), but also if the VC community hadn't turned so aggressively against SVB. They would have been ok if the run didn't happen. Prisoners dilemma at work

I really liked the thread @alexiskold did on li...

The idea is simple: if you have a SAFE with a 10% discount and the company is issuing Series A for $1/share, your SAFE won't convert into Series A but instead into Series A-1!And that Series A-1 will be identical in all respects to the Series A, and will be
lumped together with the Series A for all purposes, EXCEPT that instead of a liq pref of $1/share, the Series A-1 will have a liq pref of $0.90/share, to match the effective purchase price. And so on.
...
And believe it or
not, I've had priced rounds with up to 15 series of preferred (Series A through Series A-14) to take into account all the effective purchase prices resulting from the various caps and discounts on the SAFEs (or combination of SAFEs and convertible notes). This concept is actually
baked right into the YC form of SAFE by the way.

INTERVIEW: Germany must show leadership and vision' for Ukraine

Scholz's coalition partners, Germany's public and its allies are demanding more but the Chancellor still seems reluctant to give it, he says.
Nowhere was this more evident than in Chancellor Olaf Scholz's apparent dithering over whether Germany would send Ukraine modern Leopard tanks or approve the transfer of tanks help by other countries to Ukraine a situation that frustrated both Ukraine and its allies.
These kinds of decisions were only made possible after months and months of in front of the scenes and behind the scenes pressure and negotiations to get Germany to move the ball forward, Berlin says, adding that Germans should get used to more being expected from their country.

It was a fever-dream, a non-stop rollercoaster: David Roher on making Nalvany'

But perhaps no-one could have predicted how world events would make the film, now nominated for best documentary at Oscar and Bafta, even more timely.
We understood the film was of critical importance but couldn't have anticipated just how much the Russian invasion of Ukraine would thrust our film into even greater importance and significance, both for the world and Navalny the man, says Roher from Sundance where he is presenting the film to a live audience after last year's virtual premiere.
...
The power struggle between subject and filmmaker, between politician and documentarian, between a man who is gifted at manipulating and controlling news versus me, is the film's metanarrative and a component I'm quite proud of, says Roher.
...
As the film follows Navalny and Grozev's investigations into the assassination attempt and its aftermath, there are moments that leave both the protagonists and audience aghast: how Grozev discovers the identities of the Russian agents involved in the poisoning; Navalny's decision to return to Russia rather than remain another politician in exile; and the telephone call in which one of the agents confesses on tape.

PREDICTION: There's a mass extinction event coming for early & mid-stage companies. Late '23 & '24 will make the '08 financial crisis look quaint for startups. Below I explain when, why & how it will start & offer *detailed advice to founders* on surviving the looming die-off. /1
...
Many startups raised ~2 years of cash in 2021 and 2022. They cut burn in H2 2022 to extend that 🛫. But no matter what, they’ll need to raise again (or sell, or become a 🧟) in late 2023 and 2024. /3
...
This time is different. 2021, for startups, was more toxic than the GFC. The hangover will start later this year and will be more severe than that from the GFC. /7
...
To survive, here’s 7 steps early-stage founders should take: /14
1. Raise 💰now or sooner than you expected, before the Great Flood 🌊of 2023. If you fail, you can always try again later. But if you wait, try later & fail, well… /15
...
5. Trade better unit economics for growth. Growth rates are coming way down for everyone this year. It’s all relative when you’re raising money. If you can nail your unit economics, you can always ramp burn and growth later. /19
...
7. Be decisive. Half-measures rarely succeed. /END
These dudes were legit everywhere in 2018. Very impressive. At the same time, the messaging always seemed hollow to me. I assumed that I was in the target market, and they made that very clear, but I never heard why I needed to care about a 'credit card for founders.' Felt more like they had a lot of VC money and wanted to take a market. But apparently it worked!

1/ How Brex went from an unknown company to a household name among startups (our target market) in a matter of weeks:
...
4/ We tracked in excel which employees, investors, advisors, and friends were sharing the press with their networks and ensured everyone we wanted to post did so. The same day we blanketed San Francisco, where much of our target market was located, with billboards reading:
...
7/ 1) Repetition. A founder might wake up and see our fundraise announcement on social media, on the walk to the office hear an ad for Brex on the SaaStr podcast while passing several Brex billboards, and walk into the office with a bottle of Champagne from Brex waiting for them.
8/ A founder from out of town may come in for SaaStr Annual. When they check in to their hotel the key card to access their room is a Brex credit card, a task rabbit hands them a Brexfast burrito outside the conference, they see our CEO speaking,
...
11/ Most Series A startups can afford everything mentioned in this post except the billboards (which were ~150k/mo for 3 months). The PR was earned. Sponsoring podcasts and events is reasonable and common. Champagne was $50 each to a couple hundred people. Burritos were $3 each.

I'm working on a long-form piece that summarizes the accusations made against Google by the DoJ (with visualizations that are hopefully clarifying). But my initial sense is (1/X):
- The scope of GAM/AdX doesn't pertain to Google's largest business (Search/YT);
- Market share is irrelevant. The Sherman act prohibits practices that seek to suppress competition, not success;
- Unfounded to say that higher take rates naturally or always result in higher prices paid by consumers / less money for publishers. Need to examine efficiencies.

This Seriously Hipster Bean Is Coffee's Best Hope for Survival

In south London, Nigel Motley is one of the very few UK-based coffee shop owners also extolling the virtues of the liberica bean.Liberica coffee is widely grown in the Philippines, where Motley's mother is from, and there it is called barako, which loosely translates as "stud" and has strong associations with masculinity."It's seen as this horrendously strong coffee that would give you fuel for the day," says Motley. One of the reasons for the jarring taste is that liberica beans tend to be oddly shaped with pointy tips that can burn easily while roasting.

How To Engage With The CMO - The Startup CEO blog

One of the key ways to engage with the CMO is to include them in meetings with the rest of the go-to-market (GTM) executives as a group, not in a silo. While of course I have always had 1:1 meetings with my CMO, I find that the most valuable conversations are the ones with the GTM group as a group, talking about shared objectives and the underlying drivers and coordination points to get there.
...
On the other end of the spectrum, I find it very useful to create a thinking session with the CMO, where we take time away from the day-to-day to do deep dives on strategic topics like the company's positioning, voice, or brand.
...
The last few CMOs we had at Return Path were all promoted into the role - so I got to know them pretty extensively ahead of time.

Of course, you can say the same thing for the other functional departments, but marketing is more acute based on the average tenure of CMOs.
