About forty miles outside of Birmingham, Alabama, tucked into the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, sits one hole-in-the wall U.S.-based restaurant with food good enough to convince customers to load up the car and take the hour-long drive necessary to grab a plate. Chefs Valentin and Jose aren't cooking up Old World food exactly, but rather a combination of the hearty, comforting dishes that have come to define Italian-American cuisine, steaks of all sizes, and a variety of seafood dishes to boot.

Exclusivity, like any product, gets more valuable the more people want it; it is both the cruellest and the most honest thing that a restaurant can sell. The Eighty-Six, a mega-swank steak house that opened in the West Village last fall, was, from Day One, clubby, celeb-packed, and impossible to get into-no surprise, as it's the latest from Catch Hospitality Group, which previously brought us the impossible-to-get-into Corner Store.

In 2024, DC got a slew of thrilling, genre-busting restaurants, from Dōgon to Pascual to La' Shukran to Moon Rabbit. This past year was different: more safe, less boundary-pushing. Major openings included copies and spinoffs of existing restaurants (Chai Pani, Lucky Danger) and Stephen Starr's revamp of the century-old Occidental. And 2025 closed out with two flashy new steak spots from big restaurant groups. Not exactly groundbreaking.

Revival Restaurant Group (Little Betty, Uptown Cantina, and the Family Dog) is ready to show off its shiny new interiors and menus for steakhouse Luella, which opens on Tuesday, November 25, in the former Ivy Buckhead space. Luella is billed as a "steakhouse inspired by European sensibilities," so there are slabs of premium beef and wagyu cuts, but the restaurant also offers plates of pasta and a few sushi rolls, because why not throw those in, too?

Their Miami location is on the seventh floor of the Moxy Hotel (also not Brooklyn) and their "Asian-inspired" menu has dim sum, peking duck, and spicy kung pao chicken. Every Sunday at Be.Steak.A, located in the Pruneyard shopping center, a $135-per-person buffet featuring about 130 different items takes over part of the dining room, the bar and even the kitchen. There are omelet, Belgian waffle and carving stations, a self-serve caviar bar and an over-the-top dessert selection. "We're doing something that nobody else is doing in the Bay Area at this point," said chef and owner Jeffrey Stout.
