Jayvien Sandridge has cleared waivers and been outrighted to Triple-A after a series of transactions this offseason.
Fernández, 29, has long had intriguing stuff. He tossed 54 big league innings from 2019 to 2022. His 5.17 earned run average in that time wasn't especially impressive but both his four-seamer and sinker averaged over 98 miles per hour in his most recent season.
"The greatest pitchers in baseball have tough days, and that's OK. I think we have to recognize, too, that these guys are human, and sometimes baseball is baseball. It's a tough little go. So I'm not worried about it."
I think it was good. Came up, obviously a young guy, didn't really know what to expect. Obviously struggled at the start. Being in a new clubhouse, being around guys who had show time, kind of everything, playing against better competition. I think just getting up here, getting my feet wet, it made the transition coming into this year super easy, just because I'm pretty comfortable.
Harry Ford, who was one of the breakout stars from the most recent WBC, is now firmly in a starring role for them this time around. Although every team is just playing exhibitions right now before the tournament officially kicks off, Ford made a fantastic first impression for the 2026 tournament on Tuesday. He finished the game 3/5 with a 2-run homer, and is giving Nationals fans a potential preview of what they can expect when they see him play on a big stage.
Relief pitcher Daniel Palencia will pitch for Team Venezuela in the 2026 World Baseball Classic, his agency announced Tuesday. Palencia had an interesting year with the Cubs. He recorded 22 saves during the regular season, but his usage changed drastically in the playoffs. Instead of remaining in the bullpen until the ninth inning, Craig Counsell used him earlier in games.
The catcher began his journey through the minor leagues with the Dodgers, who signed him out of Venezuela in 2019. Valladares was one of a few Venezuelan catching prospects in the Dodgers' system alongside Diego Cartaya and Keibert Ruiz. Both Cartaya and Ruiz eventually left the Dodgers via trade, but Valladares remained with the Dodgers and trudged his way through L.A.'s farm system.
Multiple fastballs, multiple breaking balls. Some of us [scouts] will say of a guy he has a quiet body, fast arm, and he has it. First outing against what's close to their Opening Day lineup . . . pretty good. He was under control, hit both sides of the plate.
