Australia's winter 2026 forecast indicates below-average snowfall, warm temperatures, and variable conditions influenced by changing ocean patterns.

Americans are facing the snowiest winter in five years as experts say a frigid December will lay the foundation for a cold couple of months. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) meteorologist and climate scientist Judah Cohen spoke to the Daily Mail about his predictions for the 2025-2026 winter season based on his comprehensive AI weather models. And it looks like December will give Americans a brutal introduction into the winter ahead.
West Virginia sits within the Appalachian region in the Almanac's forecast, which includes major cities in neighboring states like Roanoke, Harrisburg, and Scranton. This area is expected to experience below-normal temperatures throughout the winter, with the coldest stretches coming in mid- and late December, early and late January, and early February. Precipitation levels should run below normal, but snowfall will vary sharply by location. Northern parts of the region-including West Virginia's higher elevations-may see lighter totals, while southern mountain areas could be in for heavier, wetter snow. The snowiest periods are projected for late December, late January, and early to late February, with a possible encore in mid-March.
The Old Farmer's Almanac has issued its 2025-2026 Winter Forecast, calling for a season that's "mostly mild-with pockets of wild." Editor Carol Connare says that "most areas will experience near-normal to slightly milder temperatures," though certain regions could still see sudden cold snaps. For Washington homeowners, that translates to a relatively calm winter-milder than average, with less snow than usual.
Palisades Tahoe, California, has had to delay its opening day, originally scheduled for Wednesday, November 26. The delay comes as the resort struggles with limited natural snowfall and inconsistent snowmaking conditions, both of which are necessary to establish a safe and durable snow base. Despite early-season storms delivering light snowfall, the mountain has yet to experience the sustained cold and dry conditions required for effective snowmaking. Snowmaking teams have been active during every available cold snap, but brief windows coupled with high humidity have impeded the volume of snow needed to open lifts responsibly.
A Quieter Season for the Old Line State Maryland falls within the Atlantic Corridor region in the Old Farmer's Almanac forecast, which includes cities such as Baltimore, but also bigger metros like Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. The forecast calls for above-normal temperatures across the region, with the coldest periods likely to arrive in mid- to late December, early and late January, and late February.
August is set to end with a run of cool days as well as low humidity that will make it feel like the start of fall. Monday will be the warmest day of the week, with highs in the mid-80s but the rest of the week will be five to 10 degrees cooler, more in line with September averages.
