SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- A San Francisco judge denied mental health diversion for the man at the center of a double fatal hit-and-run in San Francisco nearly five years ago on New Year's Eve. Troy McAlister is facing vehicular manslaughter charges for the deaths of 27-year-old Hanako Abe and 60-year-old Elizabeth Platt in a SoMa crosswalk. McAlister was on parole and allegedly driving a stolen vehicle at the time. The case was previously instrumental in the recall of former San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin.
A 2-year-old boy whose death in a wash in Barstow during a September rainstorm appeared to be a tragic accident is actually the victim of a crime, authorities say, after Xavier Aguilera-Padilla's father was charged Tuesday, Oct. 21, with vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence. Brandon Aguilera-Padilla, 26, of Barstow, pleaded not guilty to that charge as well as one count of willful child endangerment likely to cause injury or death in Superior Court in Victorville on Tuesday afternoon. Palvindra Singh, 51, of Bremerton, Wash., was facing a misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter count alleging he caused the April 27, 2023 death of Juan Chan Saltay by speeding, leading to a five-car crash on Interstate 680 in Pleasanton. Singh was charged last year and was out of custody, hoping to complete a diversion program in lieu of criminal prosecution, court records show.

A Napa mother pleaded not guilty Tuesday to second-degree murder charges that were filed in July, which prosecutors added to earlier counts stemming from a crash that killed her two children. Yesica Barajas, 31, entered her plea before Napa County Judge Elia Ortiz, who set her next court appearance for Oct. 2 to schedule a preliminary hearing, according to court records. Jail logs show Barajas remains in custody at the Napa County jail without bail.
