Family sues driver in deadly West Portal crash for allegedly hiding assets
Briefly

In the aftermath of a tragic accident that killed a married couple and their two children, the victims' parents have filed a second lawsuit against driver Mary Fong Lau. This lawsuit accuses Lau of fraudulently transferring her real estate holdings to avoid paying damages. Lau, who faces charges of felony vehicular manslaughter, allegedly transferred her properties to limited liability companies shortly after the original lawsuit was filed. The plaintiffs claim these actions demonstrate Lau's intent to defraud them and evade justice, prompting their renewed legal action.
The fact that Lau essentially transferred the properties to herself, together with the timing of these transfers, which were recorded after Plaintiffs filed suit and the day before Lau served a motion to stay the Wrongful Death case, demonstrate Lau's intent to hinder, delay, or defraud Plaintiffs as creditors.
Attorneys who represent the victims' families yesterday called Lau's move 'an intentional scheme' to 'place assets beyond the reach of grieving families seeking justice' and 'an attempt to avoid justice by fraudulently transferring property.'
