French Word of the Day: Secu

La secu - roughly pronounced lah say-koo - is an abbreviation of the word securite, as in la securite sociale (social security). It is a feminine noun. France's social security system recently celebrated its 80th anniversary. It was created through two ordinances in 1945 - one on October 4th and another on October 19th. Most of the time, when people talk about la Secu they are referencing French public healthcare.
