French Word of the Day: Secu
"La secu - roughly pronounced lah say-koo - is an abbreviation of the word securite, as in la securite sociale (social security). It is a feminine noun. France's social security system recently celebrated its 80th anniversary. It was created through two ordinances in 1945 - one on October 4th and another on October 19th. Most of the time, when people talk about la Secu they are referencing French public healthcare."
"However, la securite sociale is more than just healthcare. It actually consists of five branches to support French residents (not just citizens). These branches offer support for families (caisse d'allocations familiales, CAF), public healthcare (Assurance maladie, or CPAM), basic pensions (assurance retraite), 'autonomy' for the elderly and disabled (such as l'allocation adultes handicapes, AAH), and workplace accidents and diseases compensation."
