Just before making the short walk from our makeshift green room (a converted office) to the Tiny Desk down the hall, the band members held hands and sang, "This will be the very best Tiny Desk." It's the kind of deadpan humor long found in the band's music, but also in their performance, as Cocker crooned, cooed and danced his way through four tracks.
Pulp capped off their big year by stopping by NPR's DC offices for an enthralling Tiny Desk Concert. Watch it below. According to the performance's description, the group psyched themselves up beforehand by singing, "This will be the very best Tiny Desk," in unison. Then, they launched into a career-spanning, four-song set featuring Jarvis Cocker getting off some stilted dance moves to accompany his deadpan vocals.
"We were obsessed with the fact that this was our 'Pop' album (we had finally achieved some 'popularity' when 'Common People' was a hit) and, as everyone knows, all pop albums have 12 songs on them: 6 tracks per side. Only problem: this took the running time of the record to 53 minutes. We were told this would compromise the audio quality of the vinyl record - but we were more bothered about not compromising the quality of our Pop Dream."
