When the Toronto Maple Leafs management prepared for the 2025 National Hockey League entry draft, they did so without a first-round draft pick. The Maple Leafs first scheduled draft selection was in the second round, pick 64, the final selection in round two. With that draft pick, the Maple Leafs selected forward Tinus Luc Koblar from Leksands IF of the Swedish Junior League.
With their final pick in the 2024 draft, the Atlanta Braves selected high school infielder/outfielder Eric Hartman with their 20th overall pick out of Holy Trinity Academy, in Otokoks, Alberta. It makes sense, given general manager Alex Anthopoulos' ties to the great country. After the Bruins drafted James Hagens seventh overall, speculation began to swirl that he could play alongside Zellers at this year's IIHF World Junior Championships. Given Zellers' strong start at the University of North Dakota, where he has tallied 15 points in 18 games, and Hagens' equally-as-strong showing at Boston College, this theory has come to fruition in the last week or so at the World Juniors.
The right-hander began his pro career this past season after being signed by the Marlins during the 2024-2025 international signing period out of Cienfuegos, Cuba. Marrero pitched 33 innings in the Dominican Summer League, allowing 14 earned runs (3.82 ERA) on 32 hits with 35 strikeouts and 12 walks. He appeared in 10 games, all of them starts.
