Sounding the alarm over a worsening youth jobs crisis, the report from the accountancy firm PwC said Britain's economy was missing out on 26bn a year because of sharp regional divisions in youth joblessness. In its annual youth employment index, it said the UK was falling behind other advanced economies amid a deterioration in the youth jobs rate to a 10-year low while other comparable nations were making progress.
In July, an authoritative report called the Joint Child Malnutrition Estimates (JME, see go.nature.com/3jad6db), compiled by the UN children's organization UNICEF, the World Health Organization and the World Bank, confirmed what many health-care professionals around the world already suspected. Since 2020, there has been an increase in the proportion of children under five affected by stunting (see 'Stalled progress'). Stunting is one of the main signs of malnutrition, which is defined as deficiencies, excesses or imbalances in nutrient intake.
The speed of that displacement could require government intervention to help support the workforce, executives said. What they're saying: "As with most things, when an exponential is moving very quickly, you can't be sure," Amodei said. "I think it is likely enough to happen that we felt there was a need to warn the world about it and to speak honestly." Amodei said the government may need to step in and support people as AI quickly displaces human work.
