A community defibrillator fundraiser has begun to remember a "very friendly and therapeutic" cat named Defib which moved into an ambulance station in east London 18 years ago. Defib lived at Walthamstow Ambulance Station, after being rescued by paramedics as a kitten in 2008 and "adored by them ever since". In 2024, the cat was faced with eviction from his home but this was overturned after more than 62,000 people signed an online petition.

There were plenty of reasons not to do it and I had always talked myself out of it, convinced there would be a better time for it. Yet on March 3, 2011, I found myself at a pet rescue, walking in the door still not entirely convinced getting a dog was a good idea. I'm just going to look, I told myself. See what they have. Maybe they wouldn't even have any.

"I would want someone to do it for me," she says, tearing up a bit. "I can't help with anything else, but I can help with their pets."
