Northern England’s lesser-known seaside towns offer wilder scenery, bracing walks, excellent seafood, and better value than popular resorts.
Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), Bamburgh Beach in Northumberland is three miles of perfection: big skies, a far-reaching, golden-sand sweep with rolling dunes, and Bamburgh Castle as its incredible masterpiece. There are views out to the Farne Islands and Lindisfarne, where you can spot seals and puffins. It's wild and wonderful and even during peak season, it still feels like there's plenty of space.
The red sun rising over the radar station on Alnwick Moor picks out the tall shape of a hare at our end of the meadow. It lopes forward a little way forever appearing, as hares always do, to be on the brink of a forward roll and then pauses, sits up and shakes the dew from its front paws.
