The Animal Crossing: New Horizons modification, uploaded to the site GameBanana on Saturday (4 January), gives the cartoon Shih Tzu larger breasts and buttocks as well as a thinner waist. Activist and author Parker Molloy highlighted the fan-made addon in a seemingly bewildered post on BlueSky, asking: "Why, though?" Her post received such significant backlash, including a flurry of transphobic death threats, that Molloy not only deleted the post, but her entire Bluesky account.
As impressive as the teams of developers that create games are, sometimes I am more blown away by the passion of the communities that build up around them, and what comes out of them. As more and more games are being made with software that is more available for general public use, like Unreal Engine, Blender, and Unity, this means that fans are able to try their hand at making custom creations to add into their favorite games, or even full-blown tools that help others do so. From clever randomizers to giant adjustments to the base game, these are some of the best fan mods and creations released in 2025.
BetterVR is a newly released mod for the Wii U-emulated version of Breath of the Wild that lets you play through the entirety of the game through the eyes of Link himself. You'll need a copy of Breath of the Wild on Wii U, a somewhat powerful PC, the Cemu emulator, and, of course, a virtual reality headset like the Meta Quest 3. But if you have all that, you can now virtually explore Breath of the Wild in a whole new way.
Modder Froddoyo introduced Project Misriah on November 16 as "a workshop collection of Halo ported maps and assets that aims to bring a Halo 3 multiplayer-like experience to Counter-Strike 2." Far from just being inspired by Halo 3, the mod directly copied multiple sound effects, character models, maps, and even movement mechanics from Bungie and Microsoft's popular series.
Since 2021, Thomas Donofri and the other members of Slurm Team have been passionately working on a conversion mod that transforms The Simpsons: Hit & Run into a Futurama game. Now, four years later, the first demo for Futurama: Hit & Run is available, and it has the approval of Joe McGinn, the lead designer of the original game. The launch trailer for the demo was released earlier this week, and it quickly caught McGinn's attention. He left a comment on YouTube, and wrote, "I can only say ... this looks awesome! I want to play it."
The crossover characters and tracks are my least favorite thing about Sonic Racing: Crossworlds , an otherwise excellent kart racer that didn't need a bunch of licensed partnerships to stand out. That said, it doesn't surprise me that the modding community has taken that concept and run with it. I do wish someone would add more characters, such as Agent Stone from the , but it seems like modders have other ideas, like Jack Black's Steve from . This is basically my worst nightmare.
I've been modding Bethesda games ever since my dad first let me play on his PC, and I was absolutely astounded by Oblivion's open-world possibilities.
