OAKLAND A 36-year-old man was charged with week with attacking two UC Berkeley police officers, slicing the hand of one, while the officers attempted to take a 12-inch knife from the suspect, according to court records. Xavier Shirley, of Oakland, was charged with assaulting a police officer a felony as well as possessing a dangerous weapon at school, and a misdemeanor count of battery upon another peace officer.
Jillian Lauren has filed for divorce for from Weezer bassist Scott Shriner after 20 years of marriage, according to TMZ. She cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for their separation. Back in April of this year, Lauren was arrested and charged with attempted murder after allegedly firing a gun at police who were pursuing three suspects in a hit-and-run chase in Los Angeles.
More than a year and a half after a group of pro-Palestinian activists were accused of causing extensive property damage at Stanford University's executive offices, five of the original defendants are set to stand trial next month on felony vandalism charges. The five defendants proceeding to trial are Maya Burke, German Gonzalez, Taylor McCann, Hunter Taylor Black and Amy Zhai. The rest of original 12 defendants have entered a court-supervised mental health diversion program that allows them to avoid criminal prosecution.
Protesters gathered Friday at the Hall of Justice in San Francisco to demand justice for two families whose loved ones were killed by an allegedly drunk driver nearly five years ago on New Year's Eve. Troy McAlister is facing vehicular manslaughter charges for the deaths of 27-year-old Hanako Abe and 60-year-old Elizabeth Platt at a SoMa crosswalk. McAlister was on parole and allegedly driving a stolen vehicle at the time. His attorney is pursuing the possibility of diversion.
One of the most significant changes is the elimination of Florida's commercial rental tax, which has been in effect for decades. First enacted in 1968, it added state sales tax to commercial leases, making Florida unique among the states. As of October 1, the tax will disappear, a measure that is expected to save businesses nearly $1.15 billion this fiscal year and more than $1.5 billion next year.
