During a junket interview with OutNow, Gyllenhaal explained that the punctuation mark was included to represent the "whole lot of energy" that comes out when the historically muted Bride of Frankenstein is finally allowed to speak. That's all well and good, but to viewers the titular exclamation point is less of a metaphor and more of a golden arrow saying, "This movie is going to be crazy."
Although the creature first appeared in Mary Shelley's 1818 novel, many popular interpretations of his story draw on a 1931 film adaptation that's considered one of the first movies in the modern horror genre.
"Here Comes the Motherfucking Bride" is the tagline from this first teaser trailer for Maggie Gyllenhaal's The Bride!, which stars Jessie Buckley as the titular (yet nameless) undead creation brought to life as an eternal companion for Frankenstein's monster ( Christian Bale). And it certainly sets a tone for what looks to be an ambitious, wild, and feminist take on Mary Shelley's classic horror tale.
