The plan to bring most workers back to the office four days a week has been delayed by a year for employees covered under new union agreements. After reopening talks, Newsom and public employee unions reached deals that extend remote work options for many staff, managers and supervisors through June 2026. As of Tuesday, Sept. 2, the state was hiring for several full-time positions that include remote work and hybrid schedule options.
